There is an art space in the Beppu Station Market, within walking distance of Beppu Station in southern Oita Prefecture. Its name is "GENJITSU. It is an experimental art space run by Naoyuki Hata, an artist living in the prefecture.
"GENJITSU" is an art group consisting of three artists who originally lived in Oita Prefecture. The three members were Hiroaki Azuma, Takanori Suzuki, and Naoyuki Hata, but the other two left the group when they moved away. Following the change in the members of GENJITSU, Hata decided to make a fresh start, changing the path from an art group to an art space.
"The most important thing is to present our work and improve ourselves. We would like to invite artists from other countries and try them out. Also, location is important, and I think a location in a shopping district is suitable. For example, people passing by and the stores across the street will see you. They wonder, and we want to value the communication that comes from that. I think it's an experiment for us and an experiment for the city."
So says Hata, who is now the only member of the group. One of his goals is to bring art into a broader frame of reference, like everyday life." GENJITSU is both an art space and a movement. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/genjitsu_art/?hl=j
