The theme of this work group is "heterogeneity". It all started with an Insta-reel video I was watching during a break. It was a before-and-after video of a hairdresser's announcement, and while the project itself was nothing new, it felt somewhat strange. The characters are a hairdresser, a teenage girl, and her mother. The girl is the one who gets her hair cut, but she doesn't speak. The mother explains the girl's feelings and the process from beginning to end. At the end of the short but long video, the girl finally says, "Because Duffy is here. The words had no context, and the roughly one-minute video gave me a sense of dread, as if I had just watched a horror movie. It was the surprise that a relationship between an overprotective mother, a daughter with communication problems, and a hairdresser who takes up with the parent and child could exist in a non-fictional setting, and the fear that came from this heterogeneity. Why did I feel that this relationship was different in this day and age where diversity is respected and discrimination is considered a bad thing? This question and diversity are the axis of the theme of the works in this exhibition.
