In the small town of San Martin Tilcajete, in Oaxaca, Mexico, there's an ancient Zapotec tradition of woodcarving and painting "Alebrijes" and carnival masks with the ancestral symbology of the region. I went there to learn the technique from the most renowned Masters in all of Mexico: Jacobo and Maria Angeles.
Blending their teachings with my own artistic style, I used flame coral tree wood and acrylic paint to craft a unique mask of a "Nahual", an ancient Mexican spirit animal which according to tradition, is our alter ego since the moment we are born.
The Mask is filled with profound native and modern symbolism talking about the mysterious nature of Nahualism.
