    Description

The creation of "River Map - Dragon Boy" spanned nearly two years from 2019 to 2020. The creation of this work was a long and tortuous process, from building the skeleton to shaping the clay and then tearing it down and reshaping it. The wandering point is what kind of posture the dragon horse should take in this work, he should not be too fierce nor too quiet, but a kind of restrained power. What I ended up with was the dragon horse bending down on his front feet and getting ready to get up, and the boy sitting on him with his hands on the sword, as if he was sending him some message. The film Avatar inside the Jack tamed the Phantom that no one can master, the harmony between them is also the first psychic communication to establish a neuronal connection, so that each other's power and a lot up. The harmony between the young man and the dragon horse is not only the rhythm of the form but also the connection between the two, a process that cultivates not only the external appearance of the work but also my own heart. It should be a kind of majestic and spiritual movement that is restrained but waiting for the right moment, with a flaming soul inside, which only needs to be internalized in the heart, not outwardly shown in the form. This state is also connected with people. Thus, the young warrior and the dragon horse are integrated into one body.
The sculpture's stylistic language is enough to make people think about it, but when it is combined with the connotation of the work, it takes it to the next level. The chivalrous and righteous spirit of a young man can harness all the restless forces. As the saying goes, one force can't override the savage power of the divine dragon and horse, and the young man and the dragon and horse are choosing their most trusted companion from each other. The sword does not need to be sheathed. When the dragon boy is finished, the image of chivalry in my heart adds a few more fairy and mythical colors.

  • About this artist

    Concept

I like to use the image of teenagers to express sculpture creation, because they are sunny inside, positive, full of vigor and vitality, representing the hope of the future. At the same time, people in this age group are forming a unique set of life and world view inside. Physiologically speaking, teenagers are just a certain stage of our long life, but psychologically speaking, teenagers can be a state of mind that lasts a lifetime. The teenagers I portray are not a certain person, they are a group of people who travel from ancient times to today and run from today to the future. They are me, and I am them.
The sword was first invented and made as a weapon of defense or attack, and as the social order stabilized and the class solidified, it slowly evolved into an object symbolizing status. Then today, as a weapon, it has long since retired from the stage of history, but it remains forever in our hearts. It is the principle, the bottom line and the last emotional anchor for each of us, and it protects our inner trepidation. The sword that appears in my work carries such a meaning.
Human beings have created this society and invented many systems, and in turn these civilized systems are creating more and more "management models" to restrain human beings. Our bodies are becoming less and less free, our voices are becoming more and more the same, and over time, we will lose our judgment and become numb. Now only my soul and mind belong to me for the time being. I use art as a weapon for my thoughts, and it has become a vehicle for me to express my views. Most of my creations combine my own life experiences and the feedback from the social environment to generate some thoughts.
I try to express love, freedom, resistance and courage through the form of art. In my works, people or animals are a kind of "Plato" in the spiritual sense. They try to explore an ideal mode of human existence, which is called "Utopia" in the West and "Taohuayuan" in China, the ideal home that human beings long for. Our aspiration for a better life and future thinking become the driving force for society to keep progressing until we are infinitely close to that ideal home.
In terms of artistic style, I have absorbed and continued the ancient Chinese Romantic artistic expression. Through some animals in mythology or reality, I express the thoughts of people. I do not draw on the art style of a specific historical period, but focus more on the cultural lineage and the expression of humanistic feelings. I make my own artworks by studying classic Chinese and foreign sculpture art from various eras and using the essence of what I have understood in a modeling technique similar to curves and orbs.
