The Tuscan area of Val d'Orcia, in the heart of Italy just south of the beautiful city of Siena, truly stands out for its extremely captivating landscape, so unique and unmistakable that it was officially recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2004.
The landscape’s distinctive aesthetics feature flat chalk plains from which almost conical hills with fortified settlements rise. It is an agrarian and pastoral landscape reflecting innovative land-management systems, towns and villages, farmhouses, the Roman Via Francigena, and its associated abbeys, inns, shrines, and bridges.
The landscape of Val d'Orcia has inspired artists and painters since the Renaissance and now it has inspired me, always in search of remote natural places, still largely untouched by human presence. The universally recognized beauty of Val d'Orcia conveys even more magical images and sensations in the period between late spring and early summer when its gentle and sinuous hills offer an incredible display of light and shadow and color shades at dawn and sunset.
The "Painted Dreams" shots were born in this way, among the most isolated and iconic hills of Val d'Orcia at the first light of dawn or the last glimmers before twilight. These are abstract images not digitally manipulated, but naturally created at the moment of shooting to best capture the emotions experienced in solitude among those silent places on the border between dream and reality.
