Fountain at City Hall 1b1 is an impressionistic rendering of the fountain in City Hall Park in lower Manhattan, New York. The fountain, designed and cast in 1872 by Jacob Wray Mould is done in the classical style and is made of bronze; the pool surrounding it is made of unpolished granite stone and actually looks quite drab and is quite dirty from time, having not been cleaned recently. But because I found the fountain so elegant, I decided to try to add something to it by virtue of rendering the stone pool to look like marble, reminiscent of the marble statues surrounding the world famous Trevi Fountain (the Trevi Fountain pool is made of Travertine stone, but the statues in and around it are of marble, which is what one sees and remembers). So I significantly reduced the contrast of the image and also the saturation of colors which does two things - turn the stone almost white, and reduce the texture to smooth as though it were polished stone. This treatment also yields a very shiny look to the fountain itself, which seems to glow silvery white, when in fact it is almost black, like all very aged bronze. To me this effect gives an added elegance of materials that is fitting for its already elegant shape and proportions.
