Story:
I was working in Hong Kong when the Handover to China happened. I was lucky enough to see the Union Jack flag come down at the Governor’s House and the Chinese flag go up right from my hotel room!
On weekends, I’d go hiking in the hills of Park View. It was so humid and warm, I’d bring a white towel to cover my 6x6 camera from the scorching sun, as well as my sweat and occasional rain. One Saturday, after a long hike through Park View to Repulse Bay, I decided to cross to Kowloon to take some sunset pictures. I was at the pier near Tsim Sha Tsui, had set up my heavy medium format camera on a small tripod, and was using an electrical trigger cord. But I accidentally damaged it by placing a heavy object over it. When I pressed the triggering button, it burned some of the internal circuits of the camera. The picture I took before it crashed is enclosed.
I waited until Monday morning to contact the Rollei factory in Germany to figure out how to send the camera and get it back before I left Hong Kong. I can’t remember how, but I found out that there was a Rollei repair shop in Hong Kong. I called them, and during the week, they fixed the camera before I traveled to Taipei.
