An exploration between a painting and a photograph, the ‘Paintograph’ is shot in Crawford Market, Mumbai, the city of dreams and entrepreneurs. ‘Jugad’/ ‘Solutions’, a series of ‘Paintographs’ is the coming together of Tarpaulin sheets (commonly called ‘chhapras’) constructed as roofs by sellers in the market as means of protection from the most basic difficulty of selling outdoors, the weather! (Rains and extreme heat in a city like Mumbai), it is their solution to unfavourable weather.
And for the way Priyal imagines it, looking at these made up Tarpaulin roofs, it takes her back to her childhood, when she while playing ‘house’, her first encounter with loosely created spaces, she created never ending spaces in her fairly large house, in south Mumbai, using bed-sheets, stools, tables, chairs and pillows. Therefore, dedicated to memory, she has created a fantasy world of her imagined spaces within the image shot by her.
