    Description

    Circle

    Life’s all about
    Meeting with people.
The moment you make a choice,
    you are full of curiosity.
At first you are curious, then you are interested, and
you are impressed and finally you are disappointed.
    Before reaching disappointment,
    you meet many people, and
you support them and you are supported by them.
It is a road stretched in the circle called
    “Circumstance.”
Eventually, you are led by a love that you meet in the circle.
Then you grow and establish yourself.
    To live
means that you think and endure between your
    dream and reality, and
walk in the circle made by people.

*Tetsuji Yamashita's works look like created by computer graphics/ paintings, but they are made by pasting together many small pieces of colored paper. Each piece is accompanied by a poem written by the artist, making the painting and the poem together a single work of art.

  • About this artist

    Concept

The color that is there now.
"It will take about two more hours for those black clouds to get here. At that moment he made up his mind to become an artist to express Africa, an absolute foreign country, using colored cutout papers. the sun rises and goes down every single day. it is a rhythm that has not changed since The fundamental questions for all living creatures could be reasoned by using the five senses and sixth intuition, which are called Like people have a different understating toward one piece of poetry, all the creatures feel and understand Here is the concept of his artwork which is "his artwork needs to be completed with a picture and a poem".
In the summer of 1990, he flew to Africa saying just this one word He wanted to see their lively eyes, not the tired eyes in the zoo, The fact that during the stay he found "the color that is there now" and "he had Of course, it is not only Africa that has life. Africa is just the starting point for Tetsuji.
Someday the youth is gone. However, another beauty is born there. Letters and pictures written on the papers that were made hundreds of years ago are attractive because the time has given them depth. However the color of works changes over time, it means that it gets older with viewers. Tetsuji compares a story to a journey and both a creator and viewers share the thoughts hidden in poetry. and his expression of "to live".
Universal rhythm. The colors that are there now. (Artist Statement)
I have about two hours before that black cloud gets here." . Africa. When I was sheltering from the rain in a sudden squall. A brief conversation I had with an old man under the same eaves decided the meaning of using colored paper as a medium to express Africa, a foreign country. The sun rises and sets again. A rhythm that has remained unchanged since time immemorial. The question of "life," which is fundamental to all living things, lives in the five senses and the sixth instinct, which can be called instinct. It is not a matter of calculation or logic. It is like a poem, each of us feeling and perceiving things differently. This is where my concept of "a painting and a poem are one work of art" comes from. What I am attempting to express is "life. In the summer of 1990, I said to myself, "I want to see a lion." That was the only reason I flew to Africa. I wanted to see living eyes, not the tired-eyed lions in the zoo. I learned the language, walked alone, and used all of my senses on my journey. The "colors that are there now" and the fact that I "lived in Africa" are the basis for expressing the life of Africa using the material of colored paper. Of course, Africa is not the only place where there is life. Life dwells everywhere and plays its rhythm. Africa is nothing but the starting point for me. Life is sometimes strong and sometimes fragile. Youth will one day grow old. But there is another kind of beauty that is born there. Paper is no different. Words and pictures written on paper that has passed through hundreds of years add a depth that only time can give, and a luminosity that reminds us of that time. The colors of the work change over time. This means that the work ages with the viewer. Aging means giving birth to stories. I liken the story to a journey, where both the creator and the viewer share the feelings hidden within the poem. This is the concept of my work and the expression of "living.
