Abdul Rahman Chughtai (1897~1975) was a painter, nationalist artist, and leading Pakistani art icon who was active in Lahore, the cultural and artistic center of Pakistan. His work also reveals his belief in Islamic cosmopolitanism as envisioned by the poet and philosopher Muhammad Iqbal.
Pakistan
Born in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan in 1897, he is said to have begun studying art at the Mayo School (now the National College of Art in Pakistan) in 1911. His works are inspired by various styles, including traditional miniature painting, Mughal style, Art Nouveau, Orientalism, and Islamic style. He produced thousands of works, including watercolors and drawings, most notably his portraits of Chughtai. In 1968, the Pakistani government awarded him the Presidential Medal for Pride of Performance, and he is recognized as one of Pakistan's foremost art icons. His works are currently in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the National Art Gallery (Islamabad), and the British Museum (London).
