    Description

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The work explores the violence of erasure.
Mark-making has shifted in the post-truth era, with the barrage of genuine and fake information swirling around the contemporary era. The paintings represent the palimpsest of residue that is piled on top of one another.
THE PAINTINGS WERE PREPARED AS FOLLOWS:
    1. Prepare the paper for painting.
    2. Masked off the areas that will not be painted.
    3. Using a synthetic flat brush, apply a layer of solid watercolor on the prepared surface
    4. Wait for an hour for the paint to dry.
    5. After drying, apply another layer of solid watercolor using a synthetic flat brush.
    6. Apply layers as you see fit, using combinations of complementary or contrasting colors.
    7. Leave the painting for a day or two.
    8. Meditate.
    9. When the painting is ready, we can now start the process of erasure.
    10. Using a flat poly brush with at least 8 inches of width we begin the process of erasure.
    11. Dip the flat poly brush in cold water.
    12. Take out excess liquid.
    13. Begin taking out the applied watercolor paint.
    14. Always apply the brush in a clean paper towel to effectively lift the watercolor paint from the paper.
    15. Do this, until the paper has been drained of its original color.
    16. Notice the stain on the paper left from the color that cannot be lifted anymore. Leave it.
    17. Repeat steps 3-16.
    18. Remember to take down notes on the date started, color added, and when the painting is finished.
    19. The process can be repeated at least three (3) times, depending on the mood of the artist.
    20. When done, sign on the back- Maerschelle Rrose Douchechamp

  • About this artist

    Concept

Maerschelle’s works might seem a cynical parody: quick and easy. But they are at par with works that are made slow and painstaking, so why sweat? He believes that his art is complete, only when its accessible to the public. He stands by the notion that no work is complete without the observer who perceives it, as participation is crucial in creating the last layer and meaning to the work. The integration of data sets AI, GAN as another method for appropriation and digital participation will be the focus of Maerschelle’s practice in the future.
