A few things lead me to make this masterpiece. I was thinking of my little daughter. How this pandemic has affected her life. At the age of 1.5 where a child experiences a new-found power of running, where a child at this age runs everywhere, trips, and learns. My daughter at this ripe age did not get a chance to fully experience this joy due to this current pandemic state. Because of lockdown, my daughter was extremely foreign to the feeling of running on grass and how amazing sand feels like between your toes. And how this situation has caused many people to become jobless and put them in such a situation where they are desperate to do anything which will help them feed their families.
There’s a very well-known Urdu saying which describes my daughter’s unfamiliarity with the feeling of sand in between toes and the stress and anxiety this pandemic has put people in by causing them to lose their jobs. It goes like
" پاوں تلے زمین کھسک جانا۔"
This translates to “Pull the rug from under somebody’s feet”. This proverb links both of these situation in a way that this pandemic has taken so much from us. Be it our lives, experiences, our jobs, and our loved ones.
The body of work visualizes us, our situation, and ourselves in this current state of the pandemic. The grey and black bubbles represent this horrible infectious disease which has caused havoc around the world completely disrupting our lives. And the purple, blue, red, and green bubbles symbolize hope and unity. The paintings as a whole give a message that how the current pandemic has surrounded us from everywhere but slowly, we are overcoming this. These colorful bubbles, our positivity will slowly take on the negativity until it finishes off.
