Every line I draw shows my respect for these wonderful ocean dwellers, the souls of the seas. This drawing is from the series Respect, which I started in the 1990s, when the discussion about the climate crisis became stronger, I already had two small children, and I wanted to demonstrate how much I also cared about the creatures at the other "end" of the world. I travelled to them in my thoughts, and the elaborate drawing work, which took many hours, was created in a kind of meditation and great love. The fine ballpoint pen refill allows infinite shades of grey, drawing the many fine hairs on the smooth, acid-free paper is very relaxing, a meditation far away, to the wild shores of the oceans, without a flight or boat trip. May the viewer feel transported there and empathize with the compassion and excitement for the marine mammals.
