Gewurztraminer (German Gewürztraminer), “spicy” or “aromatic” traminer is one of the most savory wine grape varieties, recognizable even by inexperienced tasters due to its bright aroma. Ripe Gewurztraminer berries have a special spicy aroma of rose, lychee, nuts and honey, which makes the wine from this grape variety especially tart and sweet on the palate. The French name for this valuable variety is Traminer musque, Traminer Parfume and Traminer Aromatique. The German name is Roter Traminer (redskin). The Italian name is Rosso Traminer and Termener Aromatico. At the end of the 19th century in Alsace, it was called "Gewürztraminer", but this name received official recognition only in 1973.
The dark pink color of the skin and flesh of ripe berries gives the wine shades from light golden to walnut-copper. Berries can pack a lot of sugar with incredible concentration, so the alcohol content of dry wines can be quite high.
The wine goes well with fish and chicken dishes cooked with oriental spices and with fresh fruits and cheeses.
