As I portrait artist, I decided to approach this bear painting as if a live study of a human model. I brought up a photo of a polar bear I had taken on my laptop and set the lap top at eye level. And so I painted at my easel - looking ahead to the bear, blocking in his shape, basic values, and then with some polishing lights and darks, the study was complete. When done, I was surprised to see the polar bear had almost a wistful look. But there is a little smile there, too. 60% of the world's polar bears are in Canada and they are the largest predators in the Canadian arctic. As lovely as this bear is, these highly intelligent bears are very dangerous. Perhaps there is a glint of that intelligence and possible threat in this bears bright eyes. Please note: the background and sides of this artwork are painted white. It is not the bare canvas.
