This painting draws inspiration from Billie Holiday’s iconic jazz song “Ain’t Nobody’s Business,” where the heroine expresses freedom and inner strength. The phrase “If I go to church on Sunday… then cabaret all day Monday,” written on the canvas, captures the duality of choice and courage to follow one’s desires despite societal expectations.
I aimed to create a female portrait blending pop art and retro style. At the center is the image of a Black woman, an African-American jazz singer embodying the spirit of vintage glamour. Her bright red lips symbolize sensuality and independence, while the white background highlights her face and the contrast with her elegant black gloves and vintage microphone.
This sensual, provocative artwork goes beyond a mere portrait. It reflects the depth, power, and allure of Black femininity, celebrating a jazz singer’s passion, boldness, and timeless beauty in each stroke.
