Nereids are an integral part of ancient Greek mythology. These divine creatures, followers of the sea god Poseidon, had powers over the liquid element and the space it occupied. They are described as lovely divinities, and were believed to be propitious to all sailors. They were worshipped in several parts of Greece, but more especially in sea-port towns. The epithets given them by the poets refer partly to their beauty and partly to their place of abode.
Six asteroids were named after 6 nereids and that’s exactly the painting’s theme: These divine creautures, 6 beautiful women resting on the rocks by the sea, under a full of sters sky.
