This monumental oil painting (over three meters wide) provides a symbolic interpretation of three stages of a woman’s life – childhood, adulthood, and old age. The small girl in the middle of the painting, she stands at the starting point of her life… Is her future already written, like a drama script? Or maybe she herself is the master of her destiny? She seems to be afraid of the unknown, afraid to grow up…
Olena decided to use very few colours in the artwork, as not to distract the viewer form its main theme. Figures of women are surrounded by contrasting plain rectangles, white on the left and central part of the artwork (childhood and adulthood) and dark on the right side (old age), adding to the general surreal impression.
This artwork is actually Olena’s assignment for her master’s degree in the National Academy of Fine Arts. Taking into account that Olena, in addition to be a professional painter is also a set designer, it does not come as a surprise that composition of the painting to certain extend reminds a theatre stage.
