This work is an oil on canvas of 130 /97 cm. The title comes from the Leonard Cohen song. It is a figurative expressionist style. The painting depicts two couples dancing with a piano in the background. It is a very striking painting due to the abrupt postures of the two girls. There are many warm colors. It has a lot of atmosphere and movement.
I consider this painting to be expressionist, modern and figurative. It is very colourful, with movement and atmosphere.
Both on and off the canvas, my work is all about movement, the moment and zest for life. Full of bold, Mediterranean colours, my expressionist works convey the vibrancy of an instant reaching out to be shared by the viewer. They are accessible yet not facile, arresting yet pleasing.
Dynamic expression through the use of color. Very vivid colors that give light, atmosphere and contrasts by being complementary not by chiaroscuro and spontaneity in the stroke of those loose brushstrokes and lines. Intuition and technical knowledge combined in the production of images that capture moments of life.
My inspiration for this series of compositions of young people dancing came from numerous sketches that I made in the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid where I attended to make drawings from models. The models changed position every 5 or 10 minutes.
Matisse, who has been a great influence on the work of this artist, said that a great modern conquest has been the secret of expression through color. It is precisely this secret that I use with oil paintings, combining my intuition, quick strokes and the transgression of the limits of drawing to achieve expressiveness in my paintings.
