This work is an oil on canvas of 130/97 cm. The title comes from Chris De Burgh’s song. It is a scene of two couples dancing and a girl dressed in red in the middle playing a guitar. It is very cheerful with a lot of color and atmosphere. It is a stunning work because of the postures of the figures and for the bright colors.
My inspiration for this series of compositions of young people dancing with musical instruments came from numerous sketches that I made in the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid where I attended to make drawings from models. The models changed position every 5 or 10 minutes. As I like to paint faces and hands I found that the musical instruments helped me to realise what I wanted.
I would define the artistic style as figurative, expressionist, modern and cheerful. The work focuses on movement, the moment and the joy of living. Full of bold Mediterranean colors, the expressionist works convey the dynamism of a moment to share with the viewer. I consider my works to be accessible yet not facile and arresting yet pleasing.
Matisse, who has been a major influence in my work, said that a great modern conquest has been the secret of expression through colour. It is precisely this secret that I use with oils, combining my intuition, quick strokes and my transgression of the limits of drawing to achieve expressivity in my paintings.
