Oil on paper, 41x31cm, 2022.
Matted and framed in a simple black metal frame. (size with frame 51x36cm)
This is one of four small oil portraits I made last summer, each of which having a very simple portrait composition. My friend modeled for the reference photo, and I overlaid the shape of a fish over her face. The fish shape is actually a hand-made omikuji, or fortune, that I got from a shrine here in Japan. The fortune (a folded up piece of paper) was inside the fish's tail, and I took it out and pasted it to the paper (in the bottom left corner) and painted on top of it. I really enjoyed the shape of the fish itself, so it became the theme of this painting.
