Through Thick

Concept

In truth, my work has changed a lot over the past year. I have intensely explored collaging, originally in more abstract terms but then in a dialogue with my figurative work (which I have always been interested in). The physicality of collaging eventually reversed back to traditional oil paintings. A glitch occurs with these, where uncertainty and objectification run high.


Just as much as I'm interested in collaging the figure, I am interested in abstraction and almost creating collaged, abstract works. These works stem from my understanding of chaos theory, sacred numbers, and nature. Just as much as I am depicting the nature that surrounds all of us, I am depicting my nature from within.


In general, I would say I am attempting to explore the idea of disembodiment, or specifically the disconnect between the physical existence of my body, the societal or cultural beliefs about one’s body, and then my own perception of my body. Simultaneously, I am interested in chaos and how it exists in nature while coexisting with order. These two ideas run concurrent in my work, with one idea being more apparent than the other in certain works.
