The Slavic holiday Kolyada is an ancient pagan holiday on which our ancestors celebrated the birth of the new Sun, and the event preceding Kolyada is Karachun (Korochun) — the day of the winter solstice and it begins 3 days before the revival of Kolyada. The shortest day and longest night of the year, after which the day begins to arrive. This is one of the main four holidays of the ancient Slavs, timed to the positions of the Sun (Kolyada, Maslenitsa, Kupala, Radogosch).
The winter solstice is the beginning of the astronomical new year. This is a celebration of rebirth, the birth of a new sun.
