    Created to celebrate the cultural heritage of Rushmoor, UK, this piece depicts my synaesthetic experience listening to the song Words That Say by UK cult 90s band Mega City Four. Mega City Four were, and continue to be a very important band to me. Hailing from Farnborough in the Rushmoor borough of the UK, MC4 took gigging to another level - touring constantly for many years around the globe, Japan being one of their favourite places, and in doing so found a solid following of fans who still love the band all this time later.

    But aside from being a band local to me, aside from being one of my favourite bands, Mega City Four also hold a huge part of my heart as I was blessed to be singer-songwriter Wiz's partner right up to his early death in 2006. Words That Say is a song that speaks on so many different levels. I hope you enjoy it too.

    Concept

    Karina Fraser is a synesthetic artist centring her practice on painterly study of the neurological experience of synaesthesia, the cross wiring of senses, and how it connects and disconnects physical and psychological boundaries. These ideas are abstracted into layers; worked together, washed over, merged and torn apart to emulate how we encode and retrieve autobiographical memories linked to music.

    Fraser's use of thinned layers of oil paint floated across one another communicates the son-et-lumiere of colour that appears in her experience of synaesthesia when she hears music and sound. Each canvas, built of many many layers, takes time to create, intentionally slowing life's pace to what matters the most; our connection to nature, body and spirit.

    • If there is a string on the back of the canvas or the back of the frame, you can hang it with a pin type that has a short hooking surface.
