This represents myself and Sarah (my partner) laying in bed drinking tea, it’s an intimate portrayal of our life.
Sarah has always told me that she cannot function without her first tea in the morning and it has now become a ritual.
She is holding her favourite mug and still isn’t quite awake.
When I represent myself in a painting, I will often be found with stripes on my legs, this is a nod to my home town and the chorus girl legs that can be found on two of the local cinemas.
It is oil on canvas and was painted over the course of 3 months.
As with most of my work, this started out as an emotional response to a situation. I did my initial preparatory work on my tablet, where I worked on form and colour to convey my concept. The image would have gone through many incarnations before I was happy.
Then when I was happy with the image, I transferred it to canvas where I would add paint texture and adjust if necessary to create my final work.
