Genesis Day One

Genesis 1:2-3 "And the Earth was without form, and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the waters. And God said let there be light. And there was light."

Before I started this painting I imagined the light piercing through the darkness of the deep sea. I thought of how the sea looks at night - completely black until the light touches it and the colors of the water begin to show. I used this to make a color palette of various deep dark blues to show the Darkness and light blues to use as highlights to show the Light.

The strokes of paint follow the movement of the waves at the surface of the water and below. The strokes at the top of the water is characterized by thickness and movement while the strokes below are flattened and smooth to show the calmness of the water below. The light piercing through is shown by various thick strokes of light blue to demonstrate the penetrating power of the Light on Darkness.
