    Concept

Roland Barthes notably explored the notion of mythologies using a framework of semiotics to unpick and expose the ‘language of so called mass culture’. As a trained illustrator and graphic designer, I am familiar with the frameworks and mechanisms that allow images to convey narrative and message, but as an artist am concerned with hijacking and rewiring that system to express my own ideas around the individual, society and the search for one’s own purpose. J.L. Borges’ characters weave their way through realities that are populated with mirrors, mazes and libraries- realities refracted through geometric systems or described in ancient encyclopaedias. Such archival materials are a rich source for my work- being remixed through painting, printmaking and photography… the abstract concepts of situationism, consumerism and modernism expressed through the minutiae of everyday moments, fragments of personal history and everyday experience
