India
Sreekala Nambiar is a self-taught artist from India. A lawyer by training, Sreekala discovered her interest and talent in painting at a very young age. She held on to this interest, working on her practice continually even through her law education and career, and eventually, motherhood. With more than 25 years of experience in learning and creating art, Sreekala is best known today for her colourful compositions depicting scenes from everyday life.
Sreekala’s paintings are a true embodiment of her belief that art has the ability to enliven others. By portraying simple aspects and activities of life in the most imaginative, vibrant and warm ways, her work effectively exudes positivity, leaving spectators delighted.
What’s striking about Sreekala’s art is that it reflects influences from diverse artistic practices and categories. She believes that confining to a single medium, method or style restricts her ability to communicate freely. Hence, every painting she makes draws from unique inspirations and techniques: traditional Indian figurative art, botanical art, European Renaissance oil paintings and modern Indian art. Though her style and subjects are continually varying, the soul of her oeuvre remains the same – a celebration of the everyday.
