For this large oil painting I have used a Winsor & Newton Linen support. The painting method here was used by Mark Rothko in the 1950's, when he was one of the early artist painting Colour Field.
His thinking was that ,no detail is required and that the colours alone would captivate the viewer.
In my oil painting here, as in Rothko's the oils are mixed with turpentine and they impregnate the canvas, other layers are painted over after the drying period, giving a transparent effect. The feathered edge gives a feeling of floating colour fields.
There are ten layers of paint on this canvas.
This is a very long process because of oil drying times, but it gives me a feeling of accomplishment ,that I have painted a very high quality, colourful, chromatic piece of art.
My inspiration for colourfield art was my visit to the MOMA ,New York, viewing Rothko's large colour field works.
In this type of painting, the application of paint is key to get the smooth, translucent appearance.
