Joanne Mitchell's "Forbidden Hunting," which I saw at the Musée Georges Pompidou in 2012, left a lasting impression on me. Since then, I have been fascinated by her works. (When I saw her works "The Lake" and "The Purple Tree" alongside Monet at the "Impressionism: 100 Years after Monet" exhibition at the Yokohama Museum of Art, I felt I understood where my admiration for her had come from. At the same time, I felt I understood why Monet had influenced abstract artists in contemporary art and what Joan Mitchell was inspired by Monet. I immediately painted this "Red Tree" as a challenge to her. I needed to keep thinking. After writing the yellow "Red Tree," I painted this piece as a response.
