I met Rahaman in the tiny and remote island of Madaripara in 2022 whilst I visited Bangladesh. I went to Bangladesh with the social purpose organisation Friendship who were trying to help those people in the most remote and isolated regions where mainstream support was almost impossible. Rahaman and his fellow villagers lived with the constant fear of floods which often meant having to move home and start again several times per year.
I found so many of the villagers happy and full of hope yet they lived with so much uncertainty and fear. It is these two conflicting emotions that I wanted to show in this painting and that is why one half of the portrait is dark and in shadows whilst the other side is full of light
The painting is an original oil painting. It will be framed in a bespoke wooden frame and will also come with a certificate of authenticity signed by James Earley

I paint in the style of realism and I paint those who live on the very edge of society. I am inspired by artists such as Caravaggio and Goya. I want to use my work to raise awareness of issues such as homelessness, mental health and poverty. I want my work to scream.
