This almost monochrome artwork goes in line with Zakhar’s experiments with still-life paintings, where the artist aims to interpret objects without one of their substantial features - the colour (please also see “Chair” and “Still Life with Egg”). Skilfully playing with light and shadows, composition and textures of the depicted objects, Zakhar manages to shift our attention away from colour. The viewer realises its absence (or very limited use) only after a while of careful examination of this oil painting. The first impression from the artwork is filled with mixed emotions of sadness and hope. Firstly, you feel the painting, you perceive it at the emotional level, and only a bit later you actually see it with your eyes. This is exactly the effect that the artist was trying to achieve.
