Who said the eyes are the mirror of the soul? This portrait proves that it is possible to capture likeness of a person, her facial expression, and even the mood without too much attention to eyes, which were blurred in this artwork on purpose. A contrast between a tender light face of the girl, painted with much thinner brushstrokes in a delicate and flat manner, and a yellow revolting background that together with her dark clothes are both painted with massive thick brushstrokes, creates certain feeling of tension, almost as the girl has asked you a question and is waiting for your response. It was exactly the author’s idea to catch this “moment” and reflect it in his artwork. You may recognise the girl from this painting in other works by Zakhar, in particular his portrait “Alenka”.
