    Description

    Han‐Shin Awaji Earthquake disaster happened in Kobe, Japan in 1995 was a disaster. Most of the houses were collapsed and many roads were cut off as well. Even today, there were some open spaces where the houses were built before the earthquake.
    Koji was 12 years old at that time and was living in Osaka, Japan which is near Kobe. He remembers that his house was shaken, the school were all closed down, and he remembered watching the disaster area on TV. Thinking back to these memories that he has, he sketched this landscape and this is how this work was created.

    Concept

    Koji's work may be more of an act of 'making' than an act of 'painting'.
    It is the same in that oil paint is painted with a brush, but the shape that was observed and drawn from the beautiful scenery is erased once with thinly melted paint. After the process of 'erasing' the scenery, he will trace the remaining traces on the screen. Erasing and tracing over and over creates the layer and his work gradually takes on a different beauty from the original image.
