Description

The motif of this piece is a monumental photograph of Emperor Showa signing the Japanese Constitution. It can be said that Emperor Showa has become a kind of iconic character, especially for the younger generation who did not know him before his death. On the other hand, many people, including the younger generation, react dubiously to the actual iconic image of the Emperor when he is depicted in art. In Japan, it is still a taboo to depict the emperor. When I think of the emperor, I think of the words of emperor system scholar Kiyoko Takeda: The emperor system is a scab. The emperor system is like a scab; if you try to remove it suddenly, it will bleed, but it will gradually disappear in stages. I hope that my act of depicting the emperor will contribute to the slow removal of the scab.
