I've been working on isolation and anxiety for years, and one of the things I've realized recently is that in a world where isolation has become the norm, it's not something to be overcome, but rather something that can serve to harden you and those around you. With external factors like COVID-19, I've realized that I need to be more positive, and that looking inward and finding joy in what I'm doing is good for me and others I interact with.
Virtual games, where you create an avatar, decorate your home, and make friends, have become very popular, where you can do things you couldn't do in real life. The "Hide and Seek/Exit" series focuses on the emotion of "playfulness," which is similar to enjoying your own world in a game. You move from the point of view of a stranger wandering the outside world to the point of view of a resident living in an inner utopia. Because of this, the characters in the paintings change. Because it's a place where I don't have to hide my emotions, they have faces, eyes that sparkle and make expressions, and sometimes they take the form of trees or animals. They become my avatars, new beings in their own right, creating their own world within the painting.
