I've been working on isolation and anxiety for years, and one of the things I've realized recently is that in a world where isolation has become the norm, it's not something to be overcome, but rather something that can serve to harden you and those around you. With external factors like COVID-19, I've realized that I need to be more positive, and that looking within myself and finding joy in it is good energy for myself and others I interact with.
Virtual games, where you create an avatar, decorate your home, and make friends, have become very popular, where you can do things you couldn't do in real life. The "Hide and Seek/Exit" series focuses on the emotion of "playfulness," which is similar to enjoying your own world in a game. You move from the point of view of a stranger wandering the outside world to the point of view of a resident living in an inner utopia. Because of this, the characters in the paintings change. They don't have to hide their emotions, so they have faces, eyes that sparkle and make expressions, and sometimes they take the form of trees or animals. They become your avatar and a new being in their own right, creating their own world in the painting.
Just as you move from one space to another by completing quests, you can explore Choi's playground together, looking for hidden exits in the paintings. You never know when you'll find an invisible passage between painting and painting.
