After years of working with isolation and anxiety, I've recently realized that in the current climate of isolation, it's not something to be overcome, but rather something that can serve to harden you and your surroundings. With external factors such as COVID-19, we need to be more positive, and I've found that looking within ourselves and finding joy in it is good for us and others we interact with. Virtual games, where we create avatars, decorate our homes, and make friends, have become very popular. They allow us to do things we wouldn't be able to do in real life. The "Hide and Seek/Exit" series focuses on the emotion of "playfulness," which is similar to enjoying your own world in a game. You move from the point of view of a stranger wandering the outside world to the point of view of a resident living in an inner utopia. Because of this, the characters in the paintings change. They don't have to hide their emotions, so they have faces, eyes that sparkle and make expressions, and sometimes they take the form of trees or animals. They become your avatar and a new being in their own right, creating their own world in the painting.
Just as you move from one space to another by completing quests, you can explore Choi's playground together, looking for hidden exits in the paintings. You never know when you'll find an invisible passage between painting and painting.
