Portrait of dazzle" is a series by Matsuyama exploring the fusion of visual illusion and modern art. Matsuyama draws inspiration for his work from dazzle camouflage, a visual deception technique used during World War I. For this series, only the "eyes" are accurately traced from the vast number of selfies and snapshots posted on social networking sites and created using a video projector. While the outlines of the portraits are modeled on actual people, the artist emphasizes the anonymity of the Internet and the uncertainty of information by depicting people of completely different races, genders, hairstyles, body types, and so on. Matsuyama brings to light the complex identities of contemporary people in the Internet age, and may provoke deep reflection in the viewer.
