Based on the Shinto worldview that the world is best left to the natural flow of nature because the world will naturally settle as it should, I paint while being guided by the grain of the support. By following the lines on the board without hesitation, I create organic forms, and by utilizing pauses in the composition of images, I explore the relationship between "picture" and "support" and the expressive possibilities that this relationship brings. Bamboo and Dragonfly" is the creation of my memory and the duality of my upbringing in two cultures. The bamboo is a memory of the bamboo thicket that grew behind my grandparents' house when they immigrated to Brazil. The dragonflies are based on a Japanese pattern of red dragonflies that I often saw during the autumn season in my childhood in Japan. This work is made by digging into a cedar board with an engraving knife and coloring it with face painting.
