The icon is written on a prepared board (linden, oak), impregnated with an antiseptic, covered with a textile and chalk ground (icon painting soil).
The painting is made in the egg tempera technique. All colors are of natural origin. The gilding is made by hand from leaf gold.
Ancient technologies and natural materials ensure a long life of the icon.
Volodymyr (Kyiv-Vyshhorod) icon of the Mother of God is one of the most culturally significant and famous works of icon painting. Many consider her the national palladium, the icon is credited with several miracles.
The icon was painted by an unknown artist, probably in Constantinople.
Around 1131, the Greek Patriarch of Constantinople sent the icon as a gift to the Grand Duke of Kyiv Yuriy Dolgoruky. It was kept in the Vyshgorod Convent until Yuri's son Andrii Bogolyubsky brought it to Volodymyr in 1155. After the work was almost destroyed in the thirteenth century, it was restored at least five times.
