Sea transport has played a significant role in shaping the world we live in today. It allows for the transportation of much-needed goods from places where they are abundant to places where they are scarce. This is made possible through the use of containers. While containers have been extremely helpful in sustaining and enriching communities, they also have a defining impact on the destinations they reach through the items they carry in and out.
As the artist lives near the Japanese port of Shimizu, one of the country's largest handles of foreign trade cargo, container ships and containers are a familiar sight when walking around Miho peninsula.
Skyler utilizes an impressionistic approach to create his artwork by layering and adjusting the images of ships, containers, and the receiving port areas in a time-lapse composition. The underlying message conveyed in "containers" is that our biases are akin to containers that may be useful, but have the potential to commandeer our thoughts and emotions.
