Koi is about resurrection, about following your gut, about calmly navigating the colorful wave that life may be when you are able to navigate it gracefully.
For this piece I chose oil pastel for most of the visible background and mid layer. Mixed media was used for the subsequent layers, including oil paint, modeling paste, acrylics and pigment infused varnishes, to build a colorful and complex composition overlapping the character.
This technique was inspired in the texture and color acumen seen in city walls that have been painted and graffitied over and over again, process over which they turn into a composition of their own.
