In the myth, Medusa faces punishment for committing an act of disrespect within Athena's temple. There, Poseidon seduced her driven by his desire. Enraged by the violation of her sacred space, Athena penalizes Medusa by turning her hair into snakes and distorting her face, causing anyone who gazes upon her to be turned to stone.
This story emphasizes the consequences of lustful actions, illustrating how Medusa's initial beauty gave way to a monstrous appearance, serving as a cautionary tale against vanity and the dangers of arrogance.
In my personal interpretation of this classic myth, I aim to depict how Medusa's excessive pride and self-admiration led to her downfall and eventual isolation. Through the painting, I also seek to warn against the perils of excessive pride and presumption, encouraging viewers to contemplate the importance of humility and balance in their own lives.
