Description

‘Rhinoceros and Parallel Lines' is part of the [Animals] series. Begun in 2011, this series celebrates the animal world. Patrick Gourgouillat has chosen a rhinoceros, a symbol of strength and robustness. A fetish animal in both art (notably Dürer) and literature (Ionesco's ‘The Rhinoceros’, for example), the mammal here appears to be immersed in a circle of gold against a green background. This sphere is itself centred in the dark purple rectangle of the canvas. Parallel lines rise towards the hypothetical sky. The work was executed entirely in acrylic. Patrick Gourgouillat is once again attempting to make animals and their beauty sacred.

Concept

patrick gourgouillat -p.g.- is a French painter. He grew up in the south of France, and has lived in Paris, Prague (Czech Republic) and Berlin (Germany). As a teenager, he trained in silkscreen printing at the Beaux-arts d'Avignon, and in 1997 enrolled at Berlin's Freie Universität, where he studied theater and theology.

patrick gourgouillat -p.g.- began exploring pictorial art in earnest in 1995. In Berlin, where he lived at the time, he frequented the Tacheles squat and several Berlin workshops. Little by little, he forged his own artistic universe: eclectic, changing, tender and cruel.
