"Sous le Cerisier"

"Sous le Cerisier" (Under the Cherry Tree): a large painting based on gilding, gold and Tiffany blue for the background. Let's talk about the background: it's very textured, with lots of material visible beneath the gilding. A molten gradation between gold and light turquoise blue. The gold itself is graded, darker on the sides, to give depth. The work is extremely elaborate, with golden reflections that change according to the light. Two weeping cherry branches cross the background to form an arch, laden with flowers of white/pink petals. A painting that immediately brings to mind Hanami (the period when people come to admire the cherry blossoms in Japan).
