Red hues rustle and dance on the water. The colors of the sky echo each other. Each color is like a sound, infinitely changing in response to the other sounds, forming a whole in response to the other sounds. The painter, like a jazz player, places the colors on the canvas with many unknown aspects that are not known until the painting begins. The position of the colors on the screen, the amount of the same color, the area, the speed of the brush, the shade of the color, the balance with other colors, the top and bottom of the overlap, the amount of overlapping colors, etc., are all determined intuitively, but over time. While a jazz session as actual music requires a relentless immediacy in terms of time, a painting requires a longer period of time to continue to feel as if you are slowly conversing with the painting, and a life that allows you to create that time. Some paintings are improvised, but my work is not, and I spend many times as much time looking at it as I do working on it. I believe that the absolute amount of time spent looking is important, and that there is always a horizon that can only be reached through this process. Red colors dance on the water.
