An old man named Takahama lived in a small house behind the temple cemetery. He was a very benevolent person, but little bit out of his mind as people ment - he had never been married and never get close to any woman.
One summer the old man fell seriously ill. And his daughter-in-law and nephew came and tried to ease the last hours of the old man's life. They were sitting near his bed and he fell asleep, when a large white butterfly flew into the room and sat on the pillow. The nephew tried to drive the butterfly away with a fan, but it returned to the pillow again and again and did't want to leave the sufferer. Finally, Takahama's nephew drove the butterfly out into the garden. Wite butterfly fluttered, flew to the cemetery, landed to one of the graves and then mysteriously disappeared. The young man found the name "Akiko" on this grave, there was a lettering abot Akiko died at the 18 age. The gravestone had been erected fifty years earlier and was overgrown with moss, but the nephew saw that it was surrounded by flowers, and a small reservoir was filled with fresh water.
The young man returned to the house and learned about Takahama's death. He told his mother what he had seen in the cemetery and she answer:
– Many years ago your uncle got engaged to a girl named Akiko. But she died of consumption just before the wedding. When Akiko left this world, your uncle decided never get married again and lived near the Akiko's grave all his life. He remained true to the oath and kept in his heart only one love to Akiko. Every day Takahama went to the Akiko's grave and prayed for the repose of her soul, cleaned the gravestone and planted flowers. When Takahama fell ill, he could no longer go to the cemetery, and Akiko came to him herself . White butterfly was the loving soul of his bride.
