    Description

A series of works that sampled the hashtags and icons used in SNS, which have become commonplace in modern society.
Words are vivid and changeable. Through hashtags, the artist expresses the real and speedy modern society that is constantly changing. The backgrounds are created by painting dozens of layers of acrylic, oil, and crayon paints directly onto the canvas with bare hands in order to create the texture of a wall that has become dirty with age.

The background is completed with one more layer of hard pencils to draw mathematical equations, etc., as if they were graffiti.
On top of this, hashtags and icons that symbolize the social networking society are drawn using the stencil technique, recently popularized by Banksy. The work has a Pop Art context, with elements of popular and trendy, mass-produced society, mass-consumption society, symbolic society, virtual images, ephemerality, repetition, sampling, and the non-internal.

The work symbolizes our modern society where it is commonplace for trends, social networking sites, and hashtags that are currently in vogue to be consumed and disappear, whether they will exist forever or not.

  • About this artist

    Concept

Taro Yakumo presents works that recall the refrains of 1980s and 1990s American pop art, offering an alternative expression of pop art. His art delves into the nature of consumption and mass culture. In an era of mass production and consumption, individuals are surrounded by an abundance of products and information, and their identities and values are shaped by their intimate relationship with this rapidly evolving consumer society.

In today's society, where information and images are overwhelming, Yakumo Taro aims to create new visual experiences. Through social commentary, political messages, playfulness, and humor, he offers a comical perspective that prompts us to contemplate human existence.

Furthermore, by incorporating motifs that symbolize nations and commercialism, his works satirize power structures, the nature of commercialism, and human desires within consumer society.
