Although Ebru is considered a Turkish art of painting on water, the technology itself dates back to the countries of the East. Around the 12th century in Japan, there was already an art called suminagashi, which literally means "floating ink". Shinto monks used suminagashi to draw unique patterns on thin rice paper and fabrics for decoration. The technique was so popular that it was in demand by the emperor and his entourage.
